I spent my lazy Sunday watching the 4th One Piece Movie expecting another short & cozy experience lượt thích the previous three movies and boy I could have not been more wrong. Dead kết thúc Adventure is the best One Piece movie so far by a *huge* margin và a serious recommend if you want khổng lồ see what happens when a One Piece movie is done right.
- This movie for starters is bigger than the other three films in almost every way. Animation has much more budget, much more varied cinematography (there's an opening scene that's done in CG that while dated today is incredibly ambitious) và finally a feature length runtime at 95 minutes!
- và that animation. DAMN!! It's beyond impressive, not only does it pop off in almost every frame, they absolutely *nailed* the artstyle in this one perfectly. This look is what I imagine when I read the manga và it's a total shame the rest of the anime can't look like this (understadably so but man!)
- I think this is the first time a One Piece movie made me excited about it's settings. From a bustling pirate town to lớn a secret illegal pirate boat race, khổng lồ a stormy marine base, and a raging seas cyclone, There's no shortage of interesting and kích hoạt packed places.
- The strawhats are perfectly characterized in this movie. Every single one of them are a joy to watch và each individual one has at least two or more great character moments that make them just as wholly likeable as they're supposed to lớn be.
- & for the first time, the secondary characters are actually exciting too! Every thiết kế from the major players lớn even the bit characters are a joy khổng lồ look at, thought my favorite throwaway designs are the various competitors in the aforementioned Pirate Race. (My particular favorites being these two giants who try to one up the competition early on ramping their boat and crash and burn on the shore having missed their shot.....laughing jollily all the way. It's honestly the best joke in the movie)
- and at last we have a GOOD One Piece Movie Villian in Gasparde. A stone faced hulking mass of a man who prided himself in betraying the Marines & still wears their garb in defiance. Him và his no non-sense first mate Needles are both truly imposing figures.
- But the best film only character goes khổng lồ the co-lead Shuraiya Bascud. A revenge seeking bounty hunter that's parts Portgas D Ace, Spike Speigel, Bruce Lee, etc. This dude just oozes cool & him và his martial arts steal the show action wise as he has the best fights in the entire movie. His fight vs. Needles being one of the best fights in all of One Piece. I wish he was canon.
- So are there any bad things? Not many, but there are some worth mentioning. While the movie is jam packed with action, it's actually surprisingly light on combat. Shuraiya vs Needles and Luffy vs. Gasparde are the only fights in the entire movie (beating up fodders notwithstanding) so if you're going into this movie looking for a good ol Shonen slugfest, what's on display is absolutely delicious, but not exactly large on portion form size potentially leaving you still hungry.
- The third act also focuses a lot on Luffy and Gasparde which is great but with no other major villians (Needles being defeated already) it does leave the rest of the strawhats with little to vì which is a bummer.
- There's also just one leap in lô ghích that took me out of the movie for a minute: There was one scene later on where the Strawhats realize that Gasparde gave them the slip and tricked them....and they find him later just in time lớn save the day.....by using Chopper's nose? Like.....how though!? across a cyclone infested sea?? I just....I have a lot trouble belieiving that one và it reeks of plot contrivance.
- Finally I wasn't too keen on the "kid of the week" và the "old boiler man", they felt a little half baked compared lớn the other film only characters, which is a bummer since they kết thúc up being pretty important khổng lồ the story near the end.
Overall this is an excellent movie lớn watch if you're a tín đồ of the series and want khổng lồ get into the movies, or lớn show someone who's new lớn One Piece and doesn't want to make the gargantuan time commitment yet. It's really one of the most realized visions of the One Piece Universe. Funimation should go back & dub this one!
